Choi Sook-Hee

Abstract
Objective : The population of aged workers is expected to increase in this ageing society This paper examines the present condition of industrial accident occurrence among aged workers and analyzes industry safety and health as well as the working condition needed in order to suggest appropriate policies.

Methods : Based on previous research and data from the Ministry of Employment and Labor, this study examines the ageing trend and the present condition of industrial accident occurrence among aged workers, and presents a comparative analysis of industrial disaster victims according to their ages.

Results : Immediate efforts toward the reduction of industrial accidents are requested because industrial accident occurrence among aged workers increases as the population of aged workers increases. Four of every 10 industrial accident victims are over 55 years old because of not only the aged workers¡¯ physical limitations but a lack of considerate working environments for them. The first priority for policymakers should be to reform the working environment for aged workers.

Conclusion : In conclusion, the paper suggests appropriate policies for the improvement of industry safety and health for the ageing society. First, guidance on accommodating the ageing society should be publicized. Second, programs and booklets on industry safety and health should be developed. Third, the working environment should be improved for aged workers. The last suggestion involves developing programs for work capacity and health management that workers can enroll in voluntarily.
